Will My Ex Come Back? | They Asked Me To Wait… Should I?

“My ex wants me to wait for them. Should I? Will my ex come back if I wait for them?”

Coach Natalie gets this question a lot in her relationship coaching sessions. Believe it or not, as counterintuitive as it sounds, waiting is not the most advantageous move.

So many people are asked by their ex to wait, and I’m sure if your ex were to watch this video, they would be frustrated by what Coach Natalie is saying. But, we don’t necessarily think that waiting for your ex is the best opportunity. It depends on the uniqueness of your relationship. No two relationships are the same. And so if you feel like you are an exception to this rule, please book a 1-on-1 relationship coaching session with Coach Natalie. You can talk it out and see what makes sense.

But more often than not, waiting is not the best move. Why? It gives your ex the opportunity to waste a lot of time. It gives your ex the opportunity to scope out their surroundings to see if there is something better, to see what option they really want to take, how they really feel, and then they’ll decide if they want to come back.

But think about that scenario. “And THEN they’ll decide if they want to come back.” Does that make us a “Plan A” or a “Plan B”? It makes us “Plan B.” All of a sudden, we are now waiting for them to come back. And what we’re really doing is saying, “Hey, you go see if you can find something better. You go figure your life out. And I’m here waiting… on the sidelines.” Does that make us more or less attractive? More often than not, we seem less attractive. We seem more needy. We seem like we are ok being “Plan B,” which means we’re going to be treated like one.

That’s not to say that all of a sudden, now, we should call your ex and say, “Hey! I’m not waiting. Screw you! It’s over!” I wouldn’t really make a humongous gesture like that. We think that there are so many more appropriate ways to handle the change, or to handle the big decision of, “Am I going to stick around or not?” So this isn’t an opportunity for you to pick up the phone and harass your ex, or say something that you might regret later.

But, there are so many ways for you to show them that you are not waiting. And that means little things like delayed responses. If your ex is calling you, reaching out to you, trying to make sure that you’re still there, maybe don’t be as available. If your ex says, “Well why are you out with her?! I thought you were waiting!” Why are you waiting?

There are so many ways that we can allocate our time that will showcase to your ex that we are not going to be on standby for their affection, that you are nobody’s “Plan B.” That you are “Plan A,” at the very least to yourself.

And so if the question is, “Will my ex come back if they told me to wait? Should I wait?”, we wouldn’t.
